medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi everyone,
Just to make things even more complicated, don't forget that the capella
regis (king's 'chapel') in the middle ages could refer exclusively to
objects used in liturgical worship (cloths, chalices, patens,
candlesticks, books, etc.). Frequently a monarch had multiple sets of
such things; each counted as a "capella". In inventories 'capella' thus
doesn't cover a building, or clerical personnel- but the various objects
used to perform the liturgy (for the king)...
re. basilicas:
the chief distinction (or broadest one, at least) to be made is whether
something is:
1) a basilica in the architectural sense (i.e. plan 'based' on classical
basilica- central vessel, sometimes with side aisles, sometimes with
clerestory; entrance in "short" end; pronounced axial organization;
sometimes lacking apse; often oriented)
or
2) in the canonical sense (i.e. a dignity with attendant privileges
conferred by the Pope, usually [/always?] involes a designated 'papal
altar').
cheers,
