This course is designed for all those who are involved in writing agendas and minutes or taking minutes at formal or informal meetings.
Objectives:
The course will enable participants to:
- Understand the importance of thorough preparation
- Increase confidence in minute-taking
- Build upon the relationship between chair person and minute taker
- Be effective in collecting material, structuring agendas and taking notes
- Write concise and accurate minutes from the notes.
There will be practical exercises and participants will bring with them existing examples of agendas and minutes to work on.

Enquiry desk skills - Manchester

Description
This course provides an introduction to enquiry answering techniques. It will take participants through the stages of the enquiry process. Consideration will also be given to the interpersonal skills of successful enquiry work and how to deal positively with common enquiry problems. The course also provides hands-on experience of how to get the best out of a range of print and electronic sources in order to deal effectively with enquiries. The course will be useful to staff new to handling enquiries and to those interested in refreshing their skills.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
1. List the stages of the enquiry process
2. Demonstrate key enquiry handling skills
3. Identify strategies for dealing with a range of enquiry situations
4. Identify, select and evaluate appropriate resources to answer enquiries
5. Plan an effective search strategy
6. Perform a search for specific information

Managing training in an organisation - Manchester

Description
The aim of this event is to develop participants' strategic approach to managing training and staff development in an HE organisation. It will focus on key questions for training managers relating to resourcing, organisational 'fit' and relationship to other strategies as well as revisiting key training and development processes. It aims to generate practical approaches to answering these questions.
Participants' will be asked to complete a short task as preparation for the course.
By the end participants should be able to:
Describe the context for staff development and training in the HE sector including main sources of funding for training and staff development.
Identify the impact of organisational culture and current major changes in the sector for staff development and training
Assess organisational indicators for informing training needs analyses, plans, programmes and evaluation efforts.
Explore the implications of these external and internal factors for a strategic approach to training management.
The content will include:
Sharing information about the external context and sources of funding
Models for classifying training and development activity
Organisational culture
Links between training and development and organisational development
Action points for each participant.
