Dear all,
types of information resources is a powerful, but I would say
under-utilised, concept in many information standardisation efforts. Not
only for "document like objects" as in the case of Dublin Core. Below some
examples and a call for a "Information Type Metadata Registry" standard
effort. Maybe some of you know of any such efforts?

The current proposed controlled vocabulary for dc.type is more of a
list representing different information genres. The great example of what DC
calls "more granular vocabularies" 1) is the one from the Government of
Canada, see below, as it provides us with a list of terms representing
document like resource (e.g decision, media release, standard). As Gauri
says below, it would be great to have this one, and other such proposed
Information Type Controlled Vocabularies 2), published in RDF with
persistent and unique URI:s assigned.

As reported in a paper on deployment of DC in corporate environments
3) "Most organizations report a need for a Type vocabulary, but an adequate
list of electronic resource types does not yet exist. In regulated
industries such as
pharmaceuticals, or in industries with a rapid product life cycle document
types are being standardised as part of standards initiatives such as eCTD
in the pharmaceutical industry and RosettaNet in the electronic components
industry."

Below some examples of "information types" in other information
standardisation efforts. that I have come across in my work as an
information architect in a pharma company:

In the pharma industry one set of types of documents is known as eCTD
documents (e.g. individual-efficacy-response). However, this list is only
published by the ICH standard organisation in a pdf document for humans to
read and understand 4).

We also need to apply different classifications of types of documents
and other kinds of information entities. For example the standardisation
organisation of clinical data (CDISC, see 5), have proposed a general
classifications schema for clinical observations (i.e. Findings, Events and
Interventions) and subclasses (e.g. Vital Signs as one subclass of
Findings). Also these classification schemas are only published in pdf
documents 5b). Likewise, we lack a coherent way to identify, name, classify
and specify the different types of clinical observations. So far the focus
has been on publishing guidelines for general interchange formats 5a) and on
proposed dataset structure for submission of clinical observations 5b).

In many content and document management systems we use in the
industry, the types of content or documents are connected to metadata
structures and to metadata rules for the creation and management of
instances of content and documents. Some search engines and portal products
also use the specifications of types of content or documents and their
available metadata structures to improve select, search, access and
presentation of documents and content.

To conclude ...

Yes, we do need more granular Document Type Terms Vocabularies to be
published by different information standardisation organisations with
assigned identifiers, usable names and definitions. Likewise for the
different classification schemas of information types, we would like to see
these published in RDF. And we also need to combine these and further
describe the structure of different types of Information Types.

Would be great to have a "Information Type Metadata Registry" standard
effort! Building on the efforts of model for data elements from the
community working on the ISO11179 model for "Data Element Metadata
Registry". So standard organisations can make use of such a model for
information types, in the same way as Dublin Core has applied the ISO11179
model for publishing the metadata elements. Maybe some of you know of any
such efforts?

Kind regards

Dear Renaud,

This is extremely helpful for us. We will discuss these and get back to you
in case of questions.

I have just one question for now, do you have these defined in an RDF schema
or as part of a namespace?

Thank you,
Gauri

Gauri: The Government of Canada has created a list of type terms in English
and French for web resources. You'll find a link to Government of Canada
Type Scheme on this page:
http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/im-gi/mwg-gtm/typ-typ/intro_e.asp. The final
report
by the group who developed the list is also linked from this page. It
outlines the scope, application and management of the scheme.

You can read our guidance how to applying type in the "Government of Canada
Metadata Implementation Guide for Web Resources" at:
http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/im-gi/mwg-gtm/ts-sf/docs/2005/migwr-gpmrw/migwr-gpm
r
wtb_e.asp.

All Government of Canada web pages are available in English and French. You
can toggle between them by clicking on "Français" or "English" at the top of
every page.

If you have any questions or comments about this, I'll be very happy to
discuss them with you.

Subject:	dc:type

Dear All,

We at the Food and Agricultural Organization are working towards developing
a
comprehensive list to describe resource types (dc:type). The current
DCMIType
list does not meet all our requirements. Before we start with the process of
expanding our list to accommodate all sorts of resource types, we would like
to know if anyone on this list has already done this. Are any of your own
organizations using similar expanded lists, and if so, is it possible to
reuse them in our applications?

Thanks in advance,
Gauri
