medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Here is a link to everything you ever wanted to know about the song:

The lyrics are included. For the Frenchly-challenged, there is no mention
made of having to dance to cross the bridge. In fact, for me it's always
been a French version of "Here we go 'round the mulberry bush," a song for
little kids to sing and pantomime the lyrics. At least, that's how I learned
it, although we never got past the first two verses. It also bears a certain
resemblance to "The Farmer in the Dell," with the seemingly endless list of
characters.
Any ideas to the contrary welcome.
