medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. April) is the feast day of:
Alexander of Alexandria (d. 328) Alexander became patriarch of
Alexandria in 312; one source says that the embittered failed
candidate for the job was Arius. Certainly the big problem of A's
patriarchate was the growing Arian controversy; A. got "Arianism"
condemned at several councils.
Laserian (d. 639) Laserian (or Molaise) was a major Irish saint,
apparently born to a royal Ulster family. He settled in Leighlin
(Co. Carlow), which he made a center of Roman-style observance.
Ursmar (d. 713) Ursmar became abbot of Lobbes in c. 689, and
apparently also served as bishop. He expanded the monastery and is
believed to have founded a number of other monastic communities,
besides evangelizing Flanders.
Idesbald (blessed) (d. 1167) Idesbald was a canon of St. Walburga's
church in Furnes (Flanders), but he left and became a Cistercian at
Dune, becoming abbot in time. He made the monastery thrive.
Galdinus (d. 1176) The Milanese Galdinus served as chancellor and
archdeacon under two archbishops. Naturally, in the context of the
German-Lombard wars of the time, Milan enjoyed papal favor and in
1165 G. was made a cardinal; in 1166 Alexander III went on to make G.
archbishop of Milan. He was an active archbishop, looking out after
the poor and rebuilding the cathedral.
