Dear Alison,
I certainly don't think you've been shrill, self-indulgent or extreme -
>Is the 14 year old who gets breast implants for her birthday
>any less oppressed than the child who is genitally mutilated?
As you say, the issues are very complex, and the questions here as to
consent are difficult to take clear moral or political positions on, other
than to agree that both are damaging outcomes where the sources of damage
must be examined
but I do think that societies are sexed (as Rebecca talked about here some
time ago re: Robinson), that is, sexed at some points and for certain times,
so it makes perfect sense to critique and seek to change a male society, a
male culture, and in a very large society, spaces and strata that are male,
Best,
Edmund
