medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> In fact, one of the examples I thought of concerns the motif
of a coffin that is too heavy to move . . . Until the episcopal
ring is put on the finger of the corpse.
that is actually the center of my interest.
i've got a seal on a charter at Chartres.
the charter is early 13th c.
the seal is definitely mid-12th c. (a reproduction of the _sedes_ figure on
the royal portal of the cathedral, apparently).
i'm thinking that the seal originally belonged to a bishop of Chartres and was
buried with him in the Planting Place of the Bishops, in a monastery outside
of town.
effigy sculptures from this place survive from the early 13th c. which suggest
that the tombs out there were "remodeled" at this period, and i'm guessing
that, following custom, they were opened and this seal (ring) was appropriated
by a fellow who was connected with the bishop's family (as a godson of the
bishop) and used by him.
the charter with the seal dates from a bit later than this fellow's time, but
i believe that i can connect him with the guy who issued the charter.
i can't tell if i'm just building some Mare's Nest of exceptionally massive
proportions or if there's a possibility that i'm actually On to Something
here.
any comments would be appreciated.
