medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> Never mind the back-chat, be it witty or witless.
whatever.
> Is there any hard evidence about what damage (if any) has been done to the
books or manuscripts at the Ecole des Chartes?
the site mentioned in Richard's second post looks to be reasonably reliable
--albeit perhaps just a wee bit partisan:

"Les cartulaires [brûlés] sont ceux de Saint-Leu d’Esserent, de
Saint-Christophe en Halatte, de l’abbaye de Morienval, de Notre-Dame de
Chartres, du prieuré de Saint-Godon-sur-Loire et de Saint-Thomas
d’Epernon."
these are, presumably, all 19th c. publications --certainly not the original
middlevil manuscripts, though i suppose it might be possible that they were
the 19th c. mss. from which the published editions were made.
i have no idea, for instance, where Lepinois & Merlet's ms. of their
publication of the cartulary of St. Mary's of Chartres might be, at present
(or before 10/11 March).
Lucien Merlet was archiviste of the departmental archives in Chartres and
Lepinois was, i believe, a native of Chartres; so i'd be surprised if their
ms. was deposed at the ENC.
my guess is, therefore, that what was burned or stolen were published editions
--rare certainly, but replacable (some of those in that list are available on
http://www.gallica.bnf.fr).
> THIS is what should be concerning us!
perhaps, but not to the point of "obsession".
> I can find nothing informative on any conventional news page but perhaps I
do not know where to look.
there should be more on it in the French press, but it's not surprising that
it didn't make CNN or the Faux News Network --there may even be a few
americans who don't even know the difference between the Ecole des Chartes and
the Ecole des Chartres.
> Is it safe to assume that the original message was invented - or at any rate
inflated - propaganda ?
i don't think so, unless you can impeach this source:
