medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Erik,
Following Nesli's e-mails, I thought I would check regarding the possible Carthusian connection you raised. Sure enough, there was a Carthusian monastery at Villeneuve lez Avignon; today it is a centre for the study of theatrical writing. Perhaps this codex was once possessed by this monastic library?
Best wishes, George

Dear List
In a Book of Hours in the Musée Benedictine (Fécamp) ´
has the former owner written on the first folio:
ARTVSIÆ VILLENOVÆ (ARTVSIAE VILLENOVAE)
It is in a fine hand, apparently imitating Italian printing types
from the 16th cent. - but is probably more likely written in the
18th cent. This I can't tell for sure.
Now - where is this location?
The old edition of Orbis Latinus does not give a satisfactory
answer. There are two options:
It could mean Villeneuve-les-Avignon (as the calendar points
to Southern France)
or: it could mean Artois (Arthesia) close to where it is now.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Erik Drigsdahl
PS: Looking at the picture of the page does it suddenly strike
me now, that a first letter perhaps has been effaced, so that
it from the beginning could have read: CARTVSIÆ (!) - which not
will be very helpful in finding the right Villeneuve, I guess?
So it really helps writing to this wonderful list - even before
the mail has been send:-)
