medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
at Chartres there were several provosts (_prepositus_) among the Dignataries
of the cathedral chapter.
the diocese was divided up into provosties (whatever) --which did not
correspond to the archdeaconries-- and each provost was responsible for
managing the estates of St. Mary within his own bailiwick.
since they were primarily concerned with financial matters, the potential for
abuse of office was apparently quite significant and the provosties were
periodically re-organised (most notably after the 1194 fire and the beginning
of the campaign of construction of the new --present-- cathedral).
