medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. March) is the feast day of:
Hesychius of Jerusalem (d. c. 450) Hesychius was a monk and hermit
before coming to Jerusalem and being ordained as a priest. He was a
major exegete (he wrote a commentary on the entire Bible, but only
two books are now extant), and his homilies are an important source
for the theology of his era.
Guntram (d. 592) Guntram was a Merovingian king who ruled over the
territory of Burgundy. He displayed the hasty temper of so many
Merovingians, divorcing his wife and executing his physician---but
then he was sorry and spent the rest of his life repenting. He was a
notably good king, and popular veneration began at his tomb after his
death.
Gundelind (d. c. 750) Gundelind was a daughter of the duke of
Alsace. She succeeded her aunt, St. Ottilia, as abbess of the
convent of Niedermunster (near Strasbourg).
Tutilo (d. c. 915) Tutilo was a monk of St. Gall who seems to have
been good at everything. He was good-looking, eloquent, a poet,
orator, architect, painter, sculptor, metallurgist, mechanic, and
musician. As if that weren't enough, he was also known for his
obedience and prayerfulness.
