medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. March) is the feast day of:
John Climacus (7th cent.) John got his nickname from a very
influential treatise he wrote, the *Ladder of Divine Ascent* (variant
title translations include *Ladder to Paradise*). He became a monk
on Mt. Sinai at the age of sixteen and went on to become full-scale
hermit. J. was much-visited as a spiritual guide.
Osbert (7th cent.?) Osberg is an English saint. She apparently
founded a convent in Coventry, which was re-founded in the reign of
Cnut, thus obscuring the historic details of O. to a high degree.
Peter Regalado (d. 1456) Peter was a noble of Valladolid. He became
a Franciscan and then a hermit, founding a series of hermits with a
friend. He lived a deeply ascetic and contemplative life. There
were a lot of miracles at his tomb, and, at a translatio 36 years
after P's death, his body was found to be incorrupt. P. was
canonized in 1746.
Amadeus of Savoy (blessed) (d. 1472) Amadeus was the son of Duke
Louis I of Savoy and Anne of Cyprus. He was married off at the age
of 17 and the couple lived a pious life together. A. was one of the
first to respond to Pius II's call for a crusade. He lived a pious
life of extreme generosity. A. was beatified in 1677.
