medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. March) is the feast day of:
Hilelith (d. c. 712) Hildelith was a Frankish nun of Faremoutiers of
Chelles, whom later tradition tells that St. Erkenwald of London
invited to England to train the nuns of a convent he founded.
Whether or not that happened, Hildelith succeeded Erkenwald's sister
as abbess of Barking and ruled for a very long time.
Catherine of Vadstena (d. 1381) Katerina Ulfsdotter was a daughter
of St. Bridget of Sweden. She was raised by the Cistercians, was
married off (although the marriage was never consummated), and spent
her life trying to imitate her mom's holiness. She followed Bridget
to Rome, and eventually took her mother's remains back to Sweden.
The rest of her life seems to have been spent in furthering Bridget's
cult.
