Managing Performance

Course outline
The aim of this event is to develop participants approach to managing performance, particularly poor performance.
By the end participants should be able to:
* Define the main ways in which managers can contribute to improved staff performance
* Diagnose performance problems
* Explore the idea of the psychological contract and it's implications for individual motivation
* Use a consistent approach to establishing expectations with staff about objectives, performance and development
* Consider what processes exist or need to be established to support this approach
The content will include:
* Examining what we mean by performance at work and diagnosing the culture in our own work areas to see what can we do about it
* Identifying existing mechanisms for enabling good performance and retaining staff
* Recognising the difference between competence, ability and performance
* The psychological contract
* Framing expectations, allocating work, agreeing objectives, reviewing performance and planning for 'difficult discussions'
* Action points for each participant.
