Dear Gordon Archer,
The first 'port of call' for someone who - on this list, at least - is known as a map engraver, is 'Tooley's dictionary of mapmakers', rev. ed., vol. [1]: A - D / editor Josephine French (Tring, Herts : Map Collector Publications, 1999), ISBN 0-906430-14-3 [now available from the dealer in antiquarian maps: Jonathan Potter Ltd, Bond Street, London], p.41. The Archer address you cite is the only one mentioned in the entry for him in this dictionary; no portrait is given.
Using an older source - 'Kartenmacher aller Laender und Zeiten' by Wilhelm Bonacker (Stuttgart : Hiersemann, 1966) - one sees an entry for "Archer, John Wykeham (1808-64) aus Newcastle u[pon]. T[yne].; London, Maler, Kupferstecher." Bonacker is good (even if this turns out not to be your man!) in that he cites his sources, in this case the [old] DNB [= 'Dictionary of national biography'] and [good old] 'Thieme-Becker'. The latter multi-volume dictionary of artists is now gradually being superseded by the completely revised multi-volume 'Allgemeines Kuenstler-Lexikon : die bildenden Kuenstler aller Zeiten und Voelker' (Saur, 1992-). All this is meant to indicate is, that map engravers must be often considered within the context of general engravers and artists - not always treated in isolation.
Yours sincerely
Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps)

Through professional genealogical research the early indications are
that I might be this mans great-great- grandson. I have a print of
his work signed, ?Drawn and engraved by J Archer, Pentonville, London.?
Is he known to you and do any pictures or portraits of him exist,
please?
Gordon Archer.
