medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I believe it's usually held that the earliest dateable extant life of St
Katherine of Alexandria is the one written by Simon Metaphrastes in the
tenth century, which does include reference to the translation of her
body to Sinai by angels. But the earliest account of the subsequent
invention of the relics there is contained in Thietmar's *Iter ad Terram
Sanctam anno 1217* and it has been suggested that there was an 'actual'
invention sometime in the late tenth century. The monastery itself was
originally dedicated to the Virgin but renamed around this time
apparently. I discuss all this briefly in my *Cult of St Katherine of
Alexandria in Late Medieval England* and also in the introduction to the
collection of essays I co-edited with Jacqueline Jenkins *Katherine of
Alexandria: Texts and Contexts in Western Medieval Europe*. That volume
contains an essay by Christine Walsh which explains the Norman
connection - basically this came about because some of St Katherine's
relics were brought to Rouen in the early eleventh century and housed in
the abbey there. Christine is the real expect on the early cult and has
a book on the subject forthcoming.

Can anyone help with this question, which was sent to me by a colleague?
In any of the Greek lives of Catherine of Alexandria, is there an
inventio narrative describing the discovery of her body? What is the
consensus on the date of the Greek life?
