medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I answer here away from my books, but I do not believe we can yet speak
of "consensus." As you know, the name of Catherine was only attached to
the monastery on Mount Sinai at a late date. I think that by the late
twelfth century the Catherine cycle as known today was in place east and
west. One odd theory is that some parts of the Catherine legend
actually developed in eleventh- and early twelfth-century Normandy,
where a nunnery was dedicated to her, and that Latin pilgrims would have
helped stimulate and shape the cult at the Sinai pilgrimage center. To
unravel this would require, as you suggest, careful study of
dedications, menologia, and bioi.

Can anyone help with this question, which was sent to me by a colleague?
In any of the Greek lives of Catherine of Alexandria, is there an
inventio
narrative describing the discovery of her body? What is the consensus
on the
date of the Greek life?
