medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. February) is the feast day of:
Romanus of Condat (d. c. 460) Romanus settled as a hermit in the
Jura mountains. He gradually attracted followers and founded two
monasteries and a convent.
Hilarus (d. 468) The Sardinian Hilarus had a hard act to follow,
elected pope to succeed Leo the Great in 461. H continued Leo's
efforts to get other bishops to acknowledge papal primacy, apparently
with some success in western Europe.
Oswald of Worcester (d. 992) Oswald was educated by his uncle,
archbishop Oda of Canterbury, then became a canon at Winchester,
became a monk, and went to Fleury to learn about monasticism. When
he returned to England, O. won the interest of St. Dunstan, who
arranged to have O. made bishop of Worcester in 961. He founded
monasteries and reformed the cathedral chapter. From 972 until his
death, O simultaneously served as archbishop of York.
Antonia of Florence (blessed) (d. 1472) The Florentine Antonia was
widowed at a young age. Staving off attempts to make her remarry,
she entered a convent of Franciscan tertiaries in Florence. In time,
she petitioned for a move to a stricter life, the monastery of Corpus
Christi (Aquila, I think), which followed the original Rule of St.
Clare without any mitigations. A. ruled the community for 7 years,
then resigned to spend the rest of her life in full-time prayer and
mystical experience. A. was beatified in 1847.
