medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The late c12/early c13 north porch at Wells cathedral is unusual in
having its medieval name recorded: 'the Great Gate of the Canons'. It
does indeed face the prebendal houses.
The eastern capital of the inner door has a carved cleric bearing a
Latin inscription: 'Enter thou into the Joy of thy lord' (I don't have
source or original latin to hand).
It's iconography is interesting too: Jerry Sampson's 'Wells Cathedral
West Front' (Sutton, 1998) has the best discussion.
Jim: if you want a list of English cathedral lay/clerical entrances and
their position and use (and the evidence for them, most of which is
topographical: Wells is exceptional in this respect), just ask.
