medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
How common is/was it to identify Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdalene? Or is
this some other Martha?

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sorry. I can't tell what she's holding and have exhausted my meager
resources for discovering the definitive symbolism of whatever flower/plant
involved. However, both images seem to have Martha presenting Mary with
choices, the flower symbolizing the good one. So even though the source for
the "virgin pride" one is from a website, it may nonetheless be the one that
makes the most sense. One of the problems with gentian is that it apparently
comes in a variety of colors and each one may have had its own symbolism.
Good luck,
MG
