medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Talking of which, Peter Damian was included in the old martyrology on 23
February, the day after he died. (He died during the night, raising the
old
question of which day the night belongs to...)

Actually, I would be willing to raise a question about which year that
particular night belonged to. The chroniclers and lists of saints agree
in stating 1072, but most places in central and north central Italy
started their numbering of the years on March 25, which means that 23
February could actually belong to our year 1073.
Peter Damian's public career is well documented thanks to his many
letters, and learned scholars have analyzed documents to construct his
lifetime itinerary, but at the end, despite a couple of last trips, he
had largely retreated to his hermitage. His final months cannot be
clearly viewed. The scholarly consensus on an obit of 1072 may not
necessarily be correct.
