medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Torie, If you need an illustration of the spikenard flower used in
direct connection with Mary Magdalen I can send you a pic from an altarpiece
in the Hunt Museum in Limerick, or you can look it up on the website catno
HCP001. The knob of MM's jar is the flower. It is called the 'nardus'
flower, and the spike comes from the carrot shaped root that is the source
of the scent. There is another example in an epitaph picture in 'Leven na
de Dood' by Truus van Bueren, pp 220 and 221. This shows the whole plant in
flower on the outside of the triptych. In the RHS Garden Book it called
'Nardostachys'. I often feel like growing one to see it for myself!. Grace
Cantillon.
