medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
>One always, however, has to take local peculiarities of site and cult into
consideration.
i'd go WAY out on a limb here and say that, more often than not, these trumped
whatever inclinations towards "standarisation" might be at work.
once again, there is this tendancy to draw a nice, smooth curve through a
bunch of points on a graph.
this may be possible --and Generalisations may be possible-- but there will
always be those pesky dots which do not lie on (or anywhere near) the Line of
Generalisation.
>In the case of Chartres Cathedral, there was a cemetery to the east of the
church, although I have not yet run across any references to how it was used.
my vague understanding is that it was exclusively reserved for canons or,
perhaps, priests serving the cathedral or its staff.
vdM might say something to that effect --or maybe contrary to it-- in his good
article on the ancillary buildings around the East end of the cathedral:
Jan van der Meulen, "Angrenzende Bauwerke der Kathedrale von Chartres,"
Jahrbuch der Berliner Museen, XVI, 1974, pp. 5-45.
