medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There was a "bureau des pauvres" in Rouen at the beginnings of the 16th
century, ruling beggars, "qui mendient et caymandent par la ville de Rouen"
(caymander=quémander, to beg). The "par" is interesting as it shows the
beggars going through the town. In the Huguet Dictionary, "caymander" is
used as well to the mendicant orders: they don't seem to be parked just at
the doors of the towns.
Anyway, a door is a narrower and busier path than any other way, and begging
can be more efficient here.
