medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. February) is the feast day of:
Meletius of Antioch (d. 381) Meletius was from Melitene. He was
made bishop of Sebaste (Armenia), but another faction forced him to
flee. Then he was transferred to Beroea (Syria). In 361 he went on
to be bishop of Antioch, which for decades had been fought over
between Arians and orthodox. M. set out to suppress Arianism there,
forced into exile several times, but eventually succeeding with the
more general triumph of orthodoxy.
Ethilwald of Lindisfarne (d. 740) Ethilwald (Aethelweald) was a
Northumbrian disciple of St. Cuthbert. In time he became abbot of
Melrose and then bishop/abbot of Lindifarne. E. is credited with
production of the Lindisfarne Gospels. E's relics were moved along
with Cuthbert's when the vikings started to attack, and King Edgar
moved them further to Westminster.
Benedict of Aniane (d. 821) Benedict II, as he's been called, was
responsible more than any other individual for the preeminence of
Benedict of Nursia's Rule in Europe. He was a Visigoth who came to
exercise great influence on Emperor Louis the Pious. B. presided
over reforming councils in 816 and 817 that imposed the Benedictine
Rule on all monasteries in the empire and provided an extra body of
legislation on observance.
Humbeline (blessed) (d. c. 1136) Humbeline was a sister of Bernard
of Clairvaux. The siblings were close. H married a noble and lived
appropriately to her station, only to be reproached by B of C. Some
years later, her husband gave H permission to become a nun. She
passed the rest of her life in severe penance. H's cult was
confirmed in 1703.
