medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. February) is the feast day of:
Vedast (d. 539) Vedast (Vaast) moved at a young age to the diocese
of Toul in Francia to set up shop as a hermit. The bishop interfered
with those plans, ordaining V and sending him off to give religious
instruction to Clovis before his baptism. Then V. turned to
missionary work. He became bishop of Arras in 499 and found it
completely devastated by a Vandal visit. He spent the rest of his
live restoring Arras and making it a center for Christianity.
Vaast's name, by the way, is the originating point for the English
"Foster" and the French "Gaston."
Amandus (d. c. 676) St. Amand is known as the apostle of Flanders.
He was born in Aquitaine and became a monk over his father's
protests. A. spent about fifteen years living as a recluse in
Bourges, went on pilgrimage to Rome, and on his return to Francia was
made a bishop without see, but with license to work as a missionary.
A. founded several monasteries and churches and converted lots of
people. His cult spread rapidly in Flanders and Picardy and reached
England in the tenth century.
Guarinus of Palestrina (d. 1159) Guarinus was a native of Bologna
who became a priest against his family's wishes. He joined a
congregation of Augustinian canons. Pope Lucius II forced G. to
become bishop of Palestrina (G. was even imprisoned for a time when
he tried to refuse). G. won a great reputation for holiness, in part
for passing on all of Lucius' gifts to the poor of Palestrina.
Angelo of Furcio (blessed) (d. 1327) Angelo was a Samuel-like
figure, a child long hoped-for and vowed prenatally to God. He was
taken off to the Augustinian monastery of Cornaclano at a young age
for his education. A's family had second thoughts and tried to
arrange a marriage for him, but his father, when on his deathbed,
confessed the vow he had taken on his son's behalf. A was horrified
and went back to the Augustinians. He became professor of theology
at Naples, serving there for the rest of his life. A's cult was
confirmed in 1888.
