medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am writing a dissertation on the monastic ideals of Paschasius
Radbertus. One of my arguments is that Radbertus used the Song of Songs
to portray Abbot Adalhard of Corbie as both Christ's bride and the
monks' bridegroom.
Can anyone recommend any scholarship about bi-gendered portrayals of
monks or secular clerics during Late Antiquity or the Early Middle Ages?
I am already aware of two scholarly works that address this subject.
1.) Matthew Kuefler's _The Manly Eunuch_ [Late Antique bishops as
feminine in relation to God and masculine in relation to their
subordinates]
2.) Lynda Coon's article "What is the Word if not semen?: Priestly
Bodies in Carolinigan Exegesis" [priests as "receptacles of God's seed"
and "inseminators of others]
Thank you.
