1. Since AAPG awards were brought up for discussion on this list
and my name was (erroneously) mentioned as someone partly responsible
for AAPG award decisions, here's some info that I hope is helpful:
The AAPG Honors and Awards Committee is responsible for recommending
individuals for awards to the AAPG Executive Committee for their
consideration and approval. The AAPG Honors and Awards Committee is a
committee within the AAPG Advisory Council.
Information about AAPG awards and the Executive committee and Advisory
council can be found on AAPG's web site.

I chair AAPG's Academic Liaison committee, which has no role in awards
or AAPG policy making. As far as I know no member of the tectonics &
structural geology discussion list is on the executive committee or
advisory council, so the interesting discussion of global change this
morning on the list is not reaching folks who nominate for AAPG awards.
2. Rather than following Tim W's recommendation and having those
few academic structure and tectonics types who are AAPG members (and who
don't like the Crichton award decision) resign, maybe folks ought to get
more involved in the association. The petroleum industry has many
interesting and challenging structure and tectonics issues that deserve
more attention from the academic world, and this industry is where many
of our students will find jobs. AAPG (& SPE) provide good venues for
discussing the science. And members of the AAPG Executive Committee are
elected by the AAPG membership.

Maybe someone should volunteer a similarly useful do's and don'ts list
for
pulp fiction writers and members of society awards committees.
