medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. February) is the feast day of:
Evagrius Ponticus (d. 399) A major spiritual writer, especially on
the monastic life. He was introduced to the Roman Martyrology only
in its last revision.
Caedmon (d. 680) Bede tells that Caedmon was a herdsman in service
to the monastery of Whitby. He had a vision telling him to compose
songs in praise of God. Abbess Hilda encouraged C, making him a monk
and having him taught the Bible.
Gregory II (d. 731) Gregory was a Roman who held several offices in
the Roman church before becoming pope in c. 669. He got into trouble
with the Byzantine emperor, Leo III, over both taxes and iconoclasm.
The Lombard king, Liutprand, took advantage of the quarrel to invade
the exarchate of Ravenna and besiege Rome---which was successfully
defended, in part because G. had repaired the walls. Greg. also
encouraged missionary work, most notably Boniface, liturgical reform,
and accountability in his see.
Paschal I (d. 824) Paschal was also a native Roman, but became a
monk and abbot before being elected pope in 817. He had difficulties
with Louis the Pious and his son Lothar. When P. died, the Romans so
disliked him that they wouldn't even allow his body to be taken to
St. Peter's (or another version says that the Roman nobles delayed
his burial while rigging the election of the next pope). I don't
know why he's regarded as a saint.
