medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. January) is the feast day of:
Emerentiana (?) Emerentiana is a Roman martyr; legend tells that she
was stoned to death after being caught praying at the tomb of St.
Agatha, her foster-sister.
Ildephonsus of Toledo (d. 667) Ildephonsus succeeded his uncle St.
Eugenius as bishop of Toledo. I. had become a monk at a young age
despite his parents' objections; he also founded and endowed a
convent. I. helped shape that rather impressively close
interrelationship between church and state that marked Visigothic
Spain.
Maimbod (d. c. 880) Maimbod seems to have been an Irish monk
peregrinating on the Continent. He is supposed to have been killed
by non-Christians who resented his preaching in Alsace. A cult
developed around his miracle-working relics, which attracted pilgrims
at Montbeliard until they were destroyed in the French wars of
religion.
