Radical Islam owes nothing to the Crusades apart from its use as a
propaganda tool. Europe lost interest in the Holy Land probably eight
hundred years ago. The very fact that the first 'Christian' army to
enter Jerusalem since the Thirtieth Century - that is the British army
in 1917 - represented a country that wished to set up a Jewish homeland
there is proof of just how far removed Europe was from the spirit of the
Crusades. It hardly needs pointing out that Crusaders were no friend of
the Jewish people. In fact what Radical Islam is trying to do is in
effect leap frog history and act as though all the events that have
taken place since the Crusades and all the changes in the Western mind
set have not in fact happened rather in the way that Phil-Hellenes
during the Greek War of Independence acted as though the were fighting
for Classical Greece while completely ignoring Greece's Roman, Byzantine
and Ottoman heritage.

To some people it's very simple: in the Middle East, violence is
perpetrated by Muslims who happen to be Arabs, Turks, Persians, etc.,
while in the West, it is perpetrated by Germans, Spaniards, Italians,
etc. who happen to be Christian. The Middle East represents some
undifferentiated homogenous hostile mass akin to Tolkien's Mordor, while
every effort is expended to do justice to the complexities of Western
culture. Combined with the Munich '38 analogy, this makes for a very
powerful mental anesthetic.
