Perhaps I should try and explain (as far as I understand it) the
classification of feasts in the Hereforord Use. There are five classes:
Principal feast
Double feast
Semidouble feast
Simple feast
Feast
The distinction between the last two is a trifle obscure. Just as in the
Sarum Use, a feast of nine lessons sometimes has three lessons, and vice
versa. The distinction is therefore whether or not there is an 'expositio'
at Matins - and I should be grateful if someone could explain what *that*
means :-)
Somewhat confusingly, a [Simple] feast [of three lessons] is just called a
feast...
I am somewhat hesitant about all this, as I am having to rely on W.G.
Henderson's edition of the Hereford Missal, and he is the least reliable of
the Victorian editors. I am, for example, a bit sceptical about him placing
the Feast of St Thomas of Hereford on 2 October, and the Octave on 8
October!
