medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. January) is the feast day of:
Deogratias (d. 457) Deogratias became bishop of Carthage after a
14-year vacancy (the Vandal king had had the last bishop set adrift
in a leaky boat---Arians could certainly be entertaining at times);
King Genseric allowed D's consecration at the emperor's request. D.
was bishop for about three years, but filled that time especially
with helping victims of the Vandal sack of Rome---ransoming captives
by selling his churches' treasures, turning the two largest churches
in Carthage into refugee shelters, and organizing daily food
distribution. D. was so highly esteemed that when he died people
wanted to tear his body to bits to get relics; some of his supporters
managed a hasty burial in a secret place to keep this from happening.
Conwoion of Brittany (d. 868) Conwoion was a Breton Benedictine. He
and six companions received a land grant in 831, upon which they
built the monastery of St. Savior (near Redon, Brittany); C was the
first abbot. C's cult was confirmed in 1866.
