medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John McChesney-Young <[log in to unmask]>
>Christopher Crockett put a pebble on his cybershoulder and dared Mac
users to knock it off
nonsense.
always "Victims", you Mackersloshers.
>is it really easier to use two 500-page .pdf documents than to use one
unsplit 1000-page one you've downloaded?
yes.
no doubt about it.
after you wait around for the 90+ Mb file to load, try doing a search in one
of those Chevalier files, John; and give yourself time to drink the cup of
coffee, not just poping over to the corner Starbucks to buy it.
>The people who ought to be using splitting utilities are the archivists who
make the files available;
my thought eggsactly.
or, nearly so --if they didn't make up overly large files in the first place
they wouldn't have any need for utilities (Mac or PC) to split them, would
they?
>perhaps ideally both as single large files for those with storage and
bandwidth to spare, and also as multiple files for the convenience of those
with little storage, slow connections, or both.
no downside to small files at all, far as i can see --esp. if they are
appropriately labeled.
want to find Chevalier's reference to St. Fulbert?
open the "E-H.pdf" file --just takes a few seconds, as opposed to the few
minutes the humongous file takes to load-- and scroll down to the "Fu"s.
> cc also lamented:
>> if i can't download it, i can't even burn it on a CD.
not a "lament" at all; just a simple statement of fact.
> What's worse, there have been studies recently that suggest that CD-R
lifespans are not as great as we had all hoped, perhaps even as brief as 2
years:

ouch.
why do i have the creepy but persistent and unshakable feeling that this whole
"digital revolution" thingie will result in a kind of Cultural Alzheimer's and
the End of Civilisation as we Know It?
the only guy i have less faith in than Steve Jobs is Bill Gates, whom i've
always considered to be just an _idiot savant_, with some really, *really*
good money Karma.
> One of these days I plan to get an external hard drive for back-up and added
storage, but it's one of those things that I keep putting off.
no solution there --HDs die, too.
i recently had a techie try and ressurect the (otherwise unbacked-up, of
course) data i had on an HD and he pronounced the task impossible, without
sending it to one of those companies which take them apart in Clean Rooms and
actually physically service the drive.
and, service your CC, as well.
>The key - both personal and institutional - is to keep migrating data ahead
of hardware failure and obsolescence.
that, and getting a real 'puter in the first place.
