The SLIM slider may be a visually appealing but functionally similar or
reduced version of the drop-down menu.
One approach that could make it more functionally useful, assuming the
categories are listed in heirarchical order, would be to allow the position
on the slider to include "all of the above".
Then you could do a search for all cohort studies and clinical trials but
not case reports without having to click multiple items to combine terms.

I think this is just a visual gimmick, and represents a degraded
version of the drop-down menu.
