medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. January) is also the feast day of:
Aemilianus (Emiliano, Miliano) of Trevi (d. 304). In this instance
Trevi is the one in Umbria (Roman-period Trebia, on the Via Flaminia)
and the saint is another early bishop, this time supposedly of Armenian
origin. Documented by a 5th- or 6th-century Passio (its two manuscripts
are said to be of the 9th/10th and the 12th centuries, respectively),
Aemilianus (in the form occurring in the Passio, Milianus) is said to
have undergone extensive torture and attempted execution during the
Diocletianic persecution (including exposure to wild beasts, with the
result that readers of Christian hagiography have come to expect) and
finally to have been decapitated at nearby Bovara while bound to a young
olive tree still visible when the Passio was written. He is the patron
saint of Trevi, whose former cathedral (the diocese is now united with
that of Spoleto) is named after him. At some point his remains were
removed to Spoleto, where they were discovered in the cathedral in 1660;
today they are back in Trevi.
What is thought to be the oldest olive tree in Umbria is located in
Bovara; it owes its preservation to the local belief that this is the
tree that witnessed Emiliano's martyrdom. A couple of black-and white
views (expandable) of it are here:

Trevi itself is an attractive hill town. For a panoramic view, see:

The interior is mostly neoclassical (neo-Albertian, actually); not so

There is a text of the _Passio sancti Miliani_ in Carlo Zenobi, _Trevi
antica, dal neolitico fino al 1214_ (Foligno: Maria Raffaella Trabalza
editore, 1995).
