PhD Studentship
Sustainable city regions

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship related to
the SOLUTIONS research project. The SOLUTIONS project aims to understand
how cities can grow in a more sustainable way by testing future
combinations of land use patterns and transport policy. The project will
test these options for different case study cities and assess their
sustainability across a range of social, economic and environmental

It is envisaged that this studentship will be awarded for research that
supports the process of developing a simple but robust computer model that
will be capable of testing the long-term sustainability of regions, both
in the UK, and rapidly developing countries in Asia and America.

Land use and transport models of the supply and demand for dwellings and
transport represent the interaction between where people choose to live,
work, and carry out their personal business, and how they travel. The
outputs can be used to assess the economic, environmental and social
impacts of planning policies.

The student will be supervised by Professor Echenique, a world renowned
authority on land use and transport. Applicants should be numerate with
an interest in the built environment.

Applicants should have, or expect to be awarded, a good first degree or
master’s degree. The studentship, to commence in January 2007, will cover
tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance stipend of £12,300 per year (for
three years) if the successful applicant can demonstrate a relevant
connection with the UK (usually through being ordinarily resident in the
UK for the past three years) and has indefinite leave to remain, and EU
nationals that have been in the UK for three years in full-time
education. Other EU applicants are eligible for tuition fees only.
