PhD Studentship in Modelling of Sustainable City Regions
Applications are invited for an EPSRC funded PhD studentship related to
the SOLUTIONS research project. The SOLUTIONS project aims to understand
how cities can grow in a more sustainable way by testing future
combinations of land use patterns and transport policy. The project will
test these options for different case study cities and assess their
sustainability across a range of social, economic and environmental
criteria. For further information see, www.suburbansolutions.ac.uk
It is envisaged that this studentship will be awarded for research into
developing a new computer model of the interaction between land use and
transport. The student will be supervised by Professor Echenique, a world
renowned authority on land use and transport modelling, who developed the
MEPLAN and MENTOR models that are used in many countries for government
funded studies. The student will work on developing a new and innovative
model for research purposes. Applicants should be numerate with an
interest in mathematical modelling. Programming skills would be an
advantage but not essential.
The land use and transport models are economic models of the supply and
demand for dwellings and transport and represent the interaction between
where people choose to live, work, and carry out their personal business,
and how they travel. The models are based on random utility theory using
hierarchical discrete choice. The outputs can be used to assess the
environmental and social impacts of planning policies and their effect on
prices. The model will be capable of testing the long-term sustainability
of regions, both in the UK, and rapidly developing countries in Asia and
America.
Applicants should have or expect to be awarded a good first degree, a
master’s degree, or have equivalent professional experience. The
studentship, to commence in October 2006, will cover tuition fees and a
tax-free maintenance stipend of £12,300 per year (for three years) if the
successful applicant can demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK
(usually through being ordinarily resident in the UK for the past three
years) and has indefinite leave to remain, and EU nationals that have been
in the UK for three years in full-time education. Other EU applicants are
eligible for tuition fees only.
To apply, please write to Professor Marcial Echenique at the address below
with a covering letter enclosing the pre-application form downloadable
from the above website. Applications should be received by 26th May
2006. For an informal discussion about this opportunity ring, Dr Tony
Hargreaves on +44(0)1223 331718.
