Mark,
the .mat format is a MATLAB specific binary format, as you have already
noticed. If you want to use text editing tools to manipulate your jobs,
save them as .xml files. This is plain text with XML markup (eXtensible
Markup Language).
However, there is another possible way to use the SPM5 batch system: When
preparing a batch, first lay out the overall structure, change parameters
if necessary and fill everything in that is not subject dependent. Then
save this as a kind of a template. You can then load your template and
fill in the subject specific details later. Once you have filled in
everything save the job under a different name and run it.
