Not sure I like the idea of habitual plagiarists, as was mentioned in
the BBC piece; let's hope people correctly interpret this as a few
doing a lot, rather than believing it is widespread. Reminds me of the
joke about the child who so regularly forged his mother's signature
that when he had a genuine sick note the school thought it was a fake.
How about putting the assignment briefing itself onto TurnItInUK just
before the deadline? If the briefing has been posted on a web site a
few weeks before it might be flagged by an originality report.
I think that making assignments more bespoke is the answer though, as
Derek suggested. But I am not sure TurnItInUK won't be so helpful as
the concept of 'reselling', which I identified in the eBay work, is
likely to happen here: If similar requests come in and you have already
done the work, a few changes and you get another fee for little effort.
Then the purchaser submits and BANG we have a match.
