Australian Postgraduate Award on Design and Public Policy
This scholarship is funded by an ARC Discovery Project grant and will
provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project
leading to a PhD in Design. Two scholarships will be awarded, one for an
applicant with an Honours 1 or 2A degree in design computing, computer
science, information systems, or related discipline and one for an
applicant with an Honours 1 or 2A degree in architecture, urban design,
public policy, law or related discipline. A background and interest in
social justice and public works is highly desirable. Motivated by the
capabilities approach advocated by Martha Nussbaum and Nobel Laureate
Amartya Sen, this research project addresses the tension between the
need for expedient planning and development of critical public
infrastructure and principles of democratic social and economic
participation. The aim of the research is to develop an instrument to
measure the public's capability to design with a focus on public
infrastructure. The instrument will be used to inform public policy to
negotiate and understand arrangements that balance social participation
with Government objectives. The research of the PhD students should be
of a calibre that leads to publications in leading computer science
conferences and journals or social science and public policy conferences
and journals, respectively. The scholarship is valued at $24,851 per
annum (APAI award, tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years,
subject to satisfactory progress. Applications are awarded on merit.
International students may apply; however, the scholarship may not be
applied toward tuition and fees for international students only.
International students should consult the International Office for the
current tuition and fees (currently AU$19,920). Successful applicants
will be expected to commence full-time PhD studies in March 2007.
