Dear Rob,
These are real issues, as you point out - the ideological aspects are perhaps key to the residual complexity. The use of personal cheques in the US is fascinating to Australians - it's as if people in the US see the exchange of money being the exchange of their own goods for someone else's goods. This issue comes up when people exchange money for money - they generally see it as an exchange of value rather than as the buying and selling of an exchange value.
I like the idea of mulberries in my pocket.

Keith,
Why not elimate all money and issue a US Government
Credit Card?
Any mass-socialized-government-controlled structure
such as money should be viewed by the US Government
along with health care, unemployment and retirement
benefits as some type of aetheist, Islamic or
Communist plot.
And it would save room in your pocket for the iPod or
Blackberry.
Thoughts of a one time Australian and Brit living in
Los Angeles.
