Thanks, Ken, for pointing us to that article. At least one of the points
made therein struck a deep chord in me: at 42, I feel excited and energised
about pursuing a doctorate in my area of training, practice and passion.
However, the idea of spending 5 years in academic limbo is a major
turn-off. I know there are project-based Ph.D.s cropping up, but not in my
vicinity.
Given that design is such a practice-based discipline, can't we create a
wider basket of options for in-practice candidates high on motivation and
with tremendous experience (but not necessarily a formal Masters degree) to
pursue research?
