Dear all,
I want to draw on the knowledge of the list (similar
as some of our colleagues did before Christmas), by
placing 2 calls to collect literature on 2 issues
related to design research:
CALL 1: can anyone point me to any reviews of, or
literature about the role/understanding of knowledge
in research in Art & Design?
CALL 2: can anyone point me to institutionalised
definitions of professional practice in art and/or
design (i.e. that could be regarded as equivalent to
the definitions of research that can be found for the
Research Assessment Exercise or Arts & Humanities
Research Council in the UK?)
The CONTEXT of these calls is a project in which we
aim for a review of the understanding/meaning of
'knowledge' in research in art and design. This aim is
initiated by the ongoing debates about the form and
conduct of research in art and design, and in
particular practice/studio-based/led research. Recent
literature (e.g. Durling, Friedman et al. 2002; Green
and Powell 2005, and discussions on this list...)
indicates that there are still confusions and no
national (and far less international) agreement on the
standards and conduct of (practice-based) research in
art & design. Our aim is to advance the understanding
& conduct of (practice-based) research in art and
design through a clarification of the relationship of
experiential and cognitive knowledge, and subsequently
through a clarification of the understanding & role of
knowledge in research. We believe that this could have
significant impact on methodologies and conduct of
(practice-based) research.
RESPONSE: I would be grateful for any comments and
suggestions concerning the two calls, and I will feed
a summary of the results of this call back to the
list.
Please send any suggestions off-list to

With best wishes for a wonderful & happy New Year
2006,
Kristina
