As I read this thread (with great interest because of the intelligence being
displayed in the discussion) it seems to me that there is a great load being
carried unnecessarily. Subjective thought is all we have to work with!
Objective thought is simply how we choose to constrain our subjective
interpretations through reflective thought grounded in unique personal
experience. "Solid generalizable research findings" are often less
significant than an insight that can illuminate an issue or way of thinking.
I would judge the significance of a PhD on how it created understanding
rather than how it counted its evidence (even as I required a convincing
argument). Researching "design processes of individual designers" can
provide astounding insights into the workings of the human mind (if it isn't
a narcissistic self justification).
