In my view the term "emotions" refers to low-level physiological events that
trigger the higher level neo-cortical processes by which "emotional
feelings" become developed and focussed. (The feelings of love and shame
that Ben referred to probably require more neocortical processing than say a
spike of fear.) The issues include how a particular "raw emotion" is
actually triggered and how this physiological event could quickly focus
feelings and direct thought in something like Pinker's model of cascading
goals and subgoals.
