I think Gordon's latest point gives us some very useful clues as to how
to structure what i would call "depth-conversations" around a theme or a
problem.
While allowing for all the points made re the nature of the DRS
biennial conference we might still apply ingenuity in terms of defining
other possibilities for structuring discussion, exploring questions and
attempting an almost workshop- or charrette-like intensity in terms of
looking in depth at issues.

A part of the systems conferences I did not mention was that, in most
cases, groups formed prior to the events, input papers were
exchanged, and individual and group reports were prepared and
published in proceedings. In addition, an evening or two was devoted
to paper presentations by anyone who wished and who needed this sort
of forum to justify attendance in the eyes of their institution.
