Applications are invited for a tenure-track position
at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in
Design, commencing July 1, 2007. Teaching
responsibilities will include lecture/seminar courses
at both the graduate and undergraduate levels,
including practicum courses in one or more of the
following areas: communication design; information
design; interactivity design/motion graphics. The
successful candidate will be involved with shaping the
direction of the MDes Program, and developing the
proposed PhD in Design.
Candidates’ areas of research interest and expertise
should include design history, criticism and theory,
visual culture studies, and design scholarship and
education. She or he will be expected to engage in an
area of research that addresses the relationship of
design to such topics as criticism and theory,
cross-disciplinary investigation in design,
contemporary practice, and the development of
institutional and international research partners.
This appointment requires participating in
departmental governance, managing committees,
developing courses and curriculum, and advising and
evaluating incoming undergraduate and graduate
students.
Applicants are expected to have a completed doctoral
or master’s degree, and either possess, or be willing
to obtain, The Association of Registered Graphic
Designers (RGD) of Ontario membership as a
Practitioner or Educator. The successful candidate
should be suitable for prompt appointment to the
Faculty of Graduate Studies. Candidates with strong
teaching and/or an extensive publication record, a
track record in graduate teaching and program
development, and research grants will be given
preference.

The Department of Design provides leadership and
excellence in design education and design research in
Canada. The York/Sheridan Joint Program in Design was
the first program in Ontario to offer the Bachelor of
Design Honours Degree (BDes Hon). The York Master of
Design (MDes) program is the first master’s degree
program in Design in Ontario. The BDes Hon curriculum
focuses upon all aspects of design studies, visual
communication design, information design, and
interactive multimedia. The MDes focuses on
contemporary research in support of excellence in
design.
