Day 0 (31.10.2006)
With hesitation, I brought along a paper mask to the Halloween party. Would the mask provoke or amuse him? He was not there, so, I couldn’t tell. But others seemed to be amused. Others, whom I had not seen for a long time, put on weight or got grey. Others, whom I met for the first time, greeted me with ‘Are you that person on the PHD-LIST?’ So with these others, I sat under the same roof, ate the same lunch, paid attention to perhaps the same old things for four days, what a privilege and what a curse.
Day 1 (01.11.2006)
Very lucky to be in a session in which all the presenters were young, smiley, and serious about their work. Iranian studying in Italy, French in Japan, Japanese in Australia, Australian in the US, Portuguese in the UK, Mexican in New Zealand…I wonder what it would be like when these young people start to run the show. … I looked to the future and prayed that the young would only adopt the good and not the bad habits of the elders.
I heard that some talks were good and some were bad. What’s wrong and what could be made better? Or that’s the nature of conference? I missed the ‘workshop’ on how to run conferences, but heard that it was heated. I talked to Victor about his proposal afterward. He said, the conference organisers might open call for themes. People might response by proposing themes. When the proposal is picked, then the proposers chair, review and are in charge of the theme-session. I liked this idea.
Oh, he liked the mask and laughed. We said cheeeeeeeeeeeese in front of the camera.
Day 2 (02.11.2006)
‘Did you notice how gendered the morning panels were?’ someone asked me. ‘Yes’ I said and added ‘the organizing committee was also rather homogenous.’ The plenary sessions were decent, although some were mostly elaborating on what they had talked about before. I appreciated Artemis calling to critically and historically study emotion. Being critical, as being evaluative – not negative, I see, is the vitamin C missing in our diet of research. I clapped!
Too tired to concentrate on monologues, so I chose to attend the ‘workshop’ about the Radical Designist and issues related to journal. There were good conversations. ‘What’s the role of Journal in building the field?’ ‘Is it good to have very specialized journal?’ ‘We need to really read/study people’s work carefully to build genuine dialogue’ ‘People are too nice in Design to raise questions, to point out issues’ ‘How do we get people to write?’ ‘People are not brave enough to argue’ ‘Is double-blinded peer review really more rigorous?’
to be continued.
