CALL FOR PAPERS
9th International Conference of the Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory
"Improvisation: Analytical, Theoretical, and Critical Approaches"
23-24 February 2007
Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen, The Netherlands
Improvisation is a prominent feature in many of the world's musics, past
and present. Scholars studying improvisation in different genres, periods,
cultures, and disciplines encounter similar issues. The conference aims at
bringing together insights from these various perspectives. Papers
stimulating interdisciplinary discussion are therefore strongly
encouraged.
All papers addressing improvisation from an analytical/theoretical
perspective are welcome. Papers fitting one of the following session
themes are particularly encouraged:
* Analyzing performed improvisation
* Historical developments in improvisational practices
* Reconstructing historical practices of improvisation
* Teaching and learning improvisation; applications of improvisation in
teaching
* The canonization of recorded improvisations and its impact on performance
practice
* Improvisational elements within composed music
* Musical improvisation in relation to other art forms
Prof. Dr. Bruno Nettl, Professor Emeritus of Music and Anthropology,
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present a keynote lecture
titled 'On the Concept of Improvisation in the World's Musics'.
Submissions for individual papers (20 minutes) are invited, as are
proposals for longer presentations/demonstrations involving the
participation of performing artists. Participants should take into
consideration that their prepared texts are meant to be heard, not read.
Reworked, written-out versions of the presentations will however be
considered for publication afterwards. The conference languages are Dutch,
English, and German.
Abstracts (400 words) should be sent by e-mail to Jochem Valkenburg
([log in to unmask]) and Steven Vande Moortele
([log in to unmask]) before December 1, 2006. The
reading committee will make a final decision and notify contributors by
December 15, 2006. Please include the name of the applicant, the name of
the institution, e-mail-address, post-address, and phone number.
For more information, please contact the conference convenors.
